Fractals

I’ve been a fan of fractals since I discovered a copy of Fractint on a BBS way back in the early nineties. This is a small sample of the images I’ve generated over the years. These are done in a wide variety of programs from Fractint to Fractal Explorer… a lot of Steven Ferguson’s programs, Gnofract 4D, etc, etc.

Fractals do not scale well (In any program (compression doesn’t do them a lot of good either.)). I don’t actually have access to the programs these are generated in anymore to “re-render” them at an appropriate size. I don’t really use Windows programs aside from what’s currently on my print machine in my studio. The files I do have on hand are fairly huge given that they’re rendered for high resolution prints. Most of these seem have stood up to the scaling process fairly well though they’re not nearly as crisp as new renders might have been.

My son tells me that these should run in linux under Wine. I don’t really use wine either. That’s something I may check into in the future… Right now, I have an easel calling my name.

If you’d like to try out some of these programs… they may actually run on a modern Windows system and they may run in Wine… “Soler” has put up many of the older, freeware programs. Gnofract is available, Gimp has several plugins, etc. If you want to do very realistic landscapes… Terragen’s available. 🙂 If you look hard enough, you might still be able to find a copy of Genesis 2 somewhere. There are several, commercial Windows programs available…
